QUANTUM PARK RYNIE CRICKET CLUB (QPRCC) OUTGUN P G SCOTTBURGH C.C

On the 17/10/2010 Quantum Park Rynie CC played P.G Scottburgh C. C at the Sezela Cricket Oval. P. G Scottburgh had won their previous two league encounters this season and was going into this match beaming with confidence. Their hopes of a third victory were dashed as they fell to a strong Quantum Park Rynie Cricket Club (QPRCC) opposition .

For Park Rynie this was their first game of the season. It was a very damp and cloudy Sunday morning when the clubs arrived at the ground; both clubs were eager to get the game underway but were faced with a wet pitch due to overnight rain. The match had to be shortened to a 25 over game. P G had won the toss and put QPRCC into bat. Park Rynie were despondent after loosing the toss but decided to go and get the job done. Batting proved to be hard going as the ball stuck to the pitch. Park Rynie lost their first wicket in the 6th over with their score on 22 and they were 35/3 in the 9th over. Park Rynie were staring defeat in the face when Prineshen Pillay (Boya) and Ryan Alexander Naidoo arrived at the crease. These two youngsters went on to post a 50 run partnership & guide Park Rynie to a modest 102 runs for 8 wickets in their 25 overs. Park Rynie knew that with their bowling attack they stood a very good chance. P.G Scottburgh never felt comfortable against the Park Rynie bowlers, they were constantly loosing wickets. They were 18/2 in the 5th over, 36/5 in the 10 and were eventually bowled out for a paltry 76 runs. Prineshen Pillay (Boya) led QPRCC bowling attack form the front claiming his first 5 wicket hall for the season. He finished on figures of 5 overs for 12 runs whilst bagging 5 wickets. Clinton Moodley and Shaun Marimuthu also claimed two wickets a piece while Jadin Nobin claimed the last wicket of the innings. Ryan Alexander Naidoo scored the highest with the Bat, he made 23 runs.

Park Rynie proved to good for P G Scottburgh on the day. The MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD went to Prineshen Pillay for his splendid 5/12/5wickets and his 15 runs he scored with the bat.
Quantum Park Rynie CC are seeing results from their development cricket programme. Junior Cricketers are coming through the programme and filtering into their Senior Side.

The following players have achieved their Provincial Colours and have come through the clubs junior Development Cricket Programme, PRINESHEN PILLAY(Boya), MOHAMMED SAFEER HANNIF and KESHLIN GOVENDER , many other players have come through the junior development programme and are currently representing Umzinto and Districts Cricket Union in Durban and they are Kyle Sewebaran, Gavin Reddy and Jadin Nobin. The current Colts Cricket Club Captain Paroshen Gramoney as also come through the Development programme. Junior Cricket development should be the goal of every club. We need junior cricketers to come through the various structures and feed into our Senior setups to keep cricket alive at club level.

PGCC inspired by Feroz Khan

An excellent all round performance by Feroz Khan inspired PG Cricket Club to victory in their first match back in the Challenge League.

Playing newcomers Sporting, PGCC amassed a respectable 174 in their 30 overs, thanks mainly to Khan who struck a fluent 62. Other contributions came via Brendon (26), Rajiv (21) and Abdullah (14).

The Sporting bowlers tried their best with young Ebrahim Essop (2 for 24) and spinner Arthur Pillay (2 for 32) bowling well.

Sporting found the going tough when they returned after the short break, losing three quick wickets with only 3 runs on the board.

Some stability returned with Neil Tomlinson (13) and Myles Poole (16) but once they were dismissed only the veteran of Alitex fame, Mohamed Nassir (22) could withstand the PFCC attack.

Sporting eventually fell for 100 runs knowing fully well that hard work only will make them a combative and competitive unit.Mubeen Ismail (3 for 25), Abdullah (3 for 15) and Feroz (2 for 13) were the pick of the bowlers for PGCC who took home 4.64 points (Community Focus)

Ton-up Yasir destroys Saints

SYMS CC could not have asked for a better start to their title aspirations as they comfortably beat Saints in a UDCU Premier league match played at the ICC grounds.

Batting first Saints were given a royal start as Craig Govender and Suhail Khan put on 103 for the opening wicket.

With this solid start, Saints were looking good to post a score in excess of 220 but irresponsible batting coupled with poor shot selection saw them reach 187 for the loss of 9 men.

Yasir Amin claimed 3 wickets for 34 runs in his 6 over spell of medium fast bowling. He was well supported by Zahid Sharif who conceded 37 runs in his six overs but claimed 3 important wickets.

SYMS started their run chase well, losing Mohsin for 12 with the score on 32. Yasir joined Lakman and together they rattled the hapless Saints' bowlers. When Lakman departed for 39, SYMS lost two more wickets quickly, Fakhir (1) and Asif (0).

But the sturdy Yasir stood firm and while wickets fell at regular intervals, he bludgeoned his way to an undefeated 123, losing five cricket balls in the process.

SYMS eventually reached 219 for the loss of 9 wickets, thus earning a total of 5.09 points.(Community Focus)

QUANTUM PARK RYNIE CRICKET CLUB

Park Rynie Cricket Club launched its development league for the up and coming young talent in the area. After months of training and development these youngsters are being introduced into the clubs senior structures.

Two development sides were formed. The youngsters were given an option to name their sides. They named their respective sides Park Rynie Urban Warriors and Park Rynie Young Guns.

Urban Warriors Captain Ryan Naidoo won the toss and elected to bat. They scored 117 runs in their 20 overs. Captain Ryan Naidoo looked good with the bat but lost his cool and played one to many attacking shots, he scored 25 before he was superbly caught on the long on boundary by Luwayne Diaz. Nihein Sing (16*runs) and Warren Gounden (12* runs) also chipped in with the bat. Luwayne and Jadin also claimed two wickets a piece to put an alt to Urban Warriors innings.
The Young Guns Innings went out with a bang when they were bamboozled by the spin of the talented YUSEF KHAN. Khan claimed four(4) wickets for 22 runs in his 4 overs. Only Captain Kalin Naidoo managed to score 17 runs before he was clean bowled Khan. Prineshen Reddy and Vigen Gramoney scored 8 runs a piece. The Young Guns were bowled out for a paltry 55 runs.
The Young Guns will have to up their game if they wish to compete with the Urban Warriors.

CORRECTIONAL SERVICES CRICKET CONCLUDES A DREAM SEASON

The Umzinto Correctional Services Cricket Club ended the season on a high note when the A Team won the T20 competition.

They beat Park Rynie by 7 wickets reaching the required 84 runs in the 12th over. Kereshan Kisten did the damage with the ball taking 3 wickets for only 9 runs in his 4 overs.

In the semi-final the previous week, the A team comprehensively dispatched of their junior Colts team by bowling them out for 51 after posting an imposing 135.

The A team also won the knock Out Cup by beating Syms in a hard fought final.
Batting first, the A team made 131 in their 25 overs with Thayuran Govender hitting a classy 46.
Syms were then bowled out for 90 in 23 overs with Faraaz Khan taking the 2 important wickets for just 14 runs. Thayuran took 2 good catches plus a stumping to end a great day for himself.

Both the A team & the Colts ended top of the points table of their respective leagues.
In the final match of the premier league, Fahiem Shaik of the A team battled hard to reach 47* against Braemar who posted 157.

The Colts though had the toughest match. They were lying third on the log going into the final match of the challenge league. They needed to bowl out the opposition, win the match & get at least 150 runs to go to the top.

The Colts bowled out klippies for 111 in 28 overs with Captain Paroshan Gramoney taking 2 for 16 off his 6 overs. That accomplished the Colts batted positively with Asghar Khan making 43 & Wesley Poole 30. But it was Paroshan that hit the winning runs in the final over, the team reaching 154.

Coach Andre Pretorius is very proud of both teams who worked very hard to achieve their victories. Goals were set & strategies implemented at the beginning of the season. Both teams achieved much more than their original goals & thoroughly deserve their accolades. It was not plain sailing as there were tight, tough matches that built the character of all players.

With the adopted High schools U/15 & O/15 teams also victorious, a coach could not have asked for a better season.

The Colts are very young & enthusiastic, playing together for the first time they are the pride of the Union whose aim it was to develop our youngsters.

The A team is a tight unit where every player contributes, not relying on 1 or 2 players to do the job.

Both teams were excellent in the field and they are very proud of all they have achieved this season. All the players are looking forward to the new season with new challenges. Andre Pretorius

‘Cricket for Cancer’

Congratulations and well done to Old Boys Cricket Club for an excellent fundraising event put together for a very worthy cause, raising R13 500.00 for Hospice. On behalf of the Executive of Umzinto & Districts Cricket Union I must state that it makes us proud to be leading a union that has an affiliate like your club. You have demonstrated that one can go beyond just playing cricket, by bringing together your players, spouses, children and supporters to make a contribution to the social upliftment of our community.

Members of our executive had a wonderful time and were pleased to be part of this fundraising activity. We hope that this could become an annual event and that other clubs could also commit themselves to making our community and the world a better and more comfortable place for all humankind, especially for those that are ill, the aged, the poor and the weak.

Thanks to the clubs that attended and assisted, although I must state that it was disappointing that more of our affiliates could not support this very noble initiative.

Tryon, Chetty off to T20 World Cup

Chloe Tryon and Trisha Chetty have been selected for the SA Women’s team to play in the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Wicket-keeper Chetty, who previously played for South Africa has scored 380 runs in the round robin stages of the CSA Women’s League with a highest score of 114 and an average of 47.50. She also contributed a valuable 36 in the semi-final demolition of Gauteng.

Sixteen year old Tryon has been the find of the season. The left arm seamer has completed her first full season for the KZN Women. In her eight league appearances, she took 20 wickets with a best of four for 12 against North West. She also bagged three for 23 in the semi-final.

After taking up the game as a three year old, she caps her outstanding season by being selected for South Africa for the first time.

“It’s amazing. I’ve never experienced this before. I’ve worked very hard to get here. In my first season, I have taken 20 wickets for KZN. My dad Brendan has been my inspiration and he has helped me with everything,” said an ecstatic Tryon.

Tryon hails from Ifafa on the KZN South Coast and represents the Umzinto and Districts Cricket Union.

Chloe Tryon selected in the 14-member squad to take part in the ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup

They say credit should be given where credit is due, and that has been the case with the National Women’s selectors and Chloe Tryon. The 16 year-old has been selected in the 14-member squad to take part in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in the Carribean in May, just reward after her stunning form in the CSA Women’s Provincial League this season. KwaZulu-Natal meet Western Province in the Final on Saturday and their success over the past season has been largely due to Tryon’s all-round performance on the field.

“Nobody’s place in the Women’s squad is secure and Chloe has pushed some of the experienced campaigners this season. She has been superb for KwaZulu Natal and she can definitely play an important role in Women’s cricket in the future. We have kept it consistent with 12 of the 14 players having taken part in the last home series against the West Indies but have included some dynamic performers,” said Senior National Coach, Noor Rhode.

Sixteen may seem a young age to make an entry into International cricket, but contributions and talent come first for the selectors. The determined all-rounder is the leading wicket taker in the competition with 20 scalps at a healthy average of 4.45 and is a powerful hitter of the ball, a skill that will come handy in the 20-over format.

“Bowling is my strong point but i can definitely bat as well. The National Women’s team have had disappointing runs at previous World Cups so hopefully i can help the team bring the trophy home,” said an excited Tryon.

The selectors have also shown their intentions with the inclusion of experienced all-rounder Susan Benade. Benade was dropped for the West Indies home series in October and has worked her way back into the national fold. Cri-Zelda Brits has been reappointed as captain, coming back after a two year absence in charge. Kirsty Thomson and Marizanne Kapp are the unfortunate players to miss out.

Squad :Cri-Zelda Brits (Captain;Gauteng), Susan Benade (Free State), Trisha Chetty (KwaZulu-Natal), Mignon du Preez (Northerns), Shandre Fritz (Western Province), Shabnum Ismail (Western Province), Ashlyn Kilowan (Western Province), Marcia Letsoalo (Northerns), Sunette Loubser (Boland), Alicia Smith (Boland), Angelique Taai (Border), Chloe Tryon (KwaZulu-Natal), Charlize van der Westhuizen (Northerns), Dane van Niekerk (Northerns).

Team Management: Enver Mall (Manager), Noor Rhode (Coach), John Bailey (Assistant Coach), Megan Dutton (Physiotherapist).

Non Travelling Reserves: Marizanne Kapp (Northerns), Kirsty Thomson (Gauteng), Dinesha Devnarain (KwaZulu-Natal), Masabata Klaas (Free State).

UMZINTO CRICKETERS PROGRESS TO TOP 8

Cricket South Africa & Standard Bank launched the National High Schools U/19 Pro20 tournament this term & the Umzinto & Districts Cricket Union was invited to enter a combined schools team. The squad consists of players from all the schools in the region.

In KZN 32 schools/districts participated in the first round. They were drawn into 8 groups of 4 and the winners of each group would be drawn into the last 2 groups of 4. The winners of these last 2 groups would play a final at Kingsmead to determine the winner of the Coastal stream who would play the winners of the Inland stream to crown the Provincial team. The Provincial team would then go on to participate in the National tournament in Pretoria where 1 team from each Province would be represented.

In the first round Umzinto was drawn into Group A together with Suid Natal Hoer, Amanzimtoti High & Southern Natal Cricket Union. Umzinto had to play all their matches away in the first round.

In the first match against Suid Natal, Umzinto fielded first & bowled out the opposition for 67 runs in 15 overs. Faraaz Khan took 3 for 12 in 3 overs while Captain Kereshan Kisten took 2 for 9 in 2 overs. Umzinto opening pair of Prineshan Pillay (38) & Jeerashen Mudaly (35) made it look easy to pass the score in just 13 overs.

In the second match against Southern Natal, Umzinto were put under pressure immediately when the opposition belted the ball all over the field. However the boys stuck to the task & S/Natal ended on 152/5 in 20 overs with Paroshan Gramoney taking 2/13 in 2 overs & Ameen Ismail 1/15 in 2 overs. Requiring 7,6 runs an over Prineshan & Jeerashen took the bowlers on. After 4 overs Umzinto were 35/1 (8,7 runs an over) when rain stopped play. Prineshan was on 21* & Kereshan 5*.

In the final group match against ‘Toti, Wesley Poole took 2/18 in his 4 overs & Reenan Chetty 1/9 in 3 to restrict the opposition to 96/6 in 20 overs. Once again Prineshan with 41 & Jeerashen with 34 set about chasing the total. The other batsmen struggled to keep the momentum due to some good bowling from ‘Toti. However Wesley & Faraaz saw the team through to a win in the second last over.

Umzinto thus ended top of group A & progressed into the final top 8 schools. In this group they are drawn with Grantleigh (Richards Bay), Glenwood & Clifton, all of them top cricketing schools.

In the first match Grantleigh was sent in to bat & were stunned by Umzinto’s tight bowling & fielding. They only hit 2 boundaries & 4 of their batsmen were run out as they were under constant pressure. Wesley, Kereshan & Ameen all bowled well to restrict them to 86/9 in their 20 overs.

While batting Jeerashen (17) & Prineshan (15) set the platform for the other batsmen to come to the party. A sensible 14* by Ashaylin Govender & an aggressive 21* by Wesley saw the team to victory in the 18th over.

Coach Andre Pretorius & Manager Strini Pillay are extremely pleased with the hard work, dedication & team spirit put in by all the players. For such a young team (half of which still play under 15 cricket), to do so well in the U/19 division against top cricketers is a feather in the Districts cap. The boys are determined to give their 110% every single match to get as far as they can. The management is thankful to the parents who come to support the team every match, those in Umzinto who have praised & encouraged the team and to the schools for releasing the players early on match days. With everyone’s support this team will not let Umzinto down, no matter what the circumstances.

Brilliant fielding from livewire Ashaylin Govender resulted in him taking a catch & a run out, while Kereshan Kisten took 3 good catches. The turning point was however when Faraaz took what must be the catch of the season at slip to get rid of the dangerous Yasir & resulting in Syms being bowled out for 116.

Put in to bat, Park Rynie were 61/4 after spinners Reenan Chetty with 2/5 & Vivek Rughubar with 1/1 made a breakthrough. Unfortunately the rain spoilt a potential win for the team.
